Institutes of Higher Learning - Universities
Singapore has two local public universities - the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) - and two local private universities, the Singapore Management University (SMU) and the Singapore Institute of Management University (UniSIM). All four universities offer student exchange programmes with both local and recognised universities around the world.
Public Universities
NUS and NTU are established research institutions and provide a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. NUS offers disciplines such as Business, Engineering, Law, Sciences, Arts & Social Sciences, Medicine, Technology, and Fine and Performing Arts. NTU offers disciplines such as Life Sciences, Business, Communications, Engineering, Art, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
Private Universities
SMU focuses on business and management programmes and employs a small-group seminar-style of teaching. It draws upon the talents of some of the best academics in the world and the expertise of many successful business leaders. SMU has received high recognition in Singapore, Asia and beyond.
Unlike the other three universities, UniSIM, Singapore’s first private university, accepts only adult learners, enabling working professionals to acquire university degrees. Major disciplines offered include Languages, Arts and Social Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, Business, IT, Culinary Arts and Counselling.
There have also been many successful tie-ups between Singapore’s local universities and prestigious foreign universities, such as Johns Hopkins University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Wharton School of the University of Pennysylvania, New York University School of Law, and Cornell University.
Many reputable foreign universities have also set up campuses in Singapore. These include INSEAD, University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Duke University, and SP Jain Centre of Management.
