With numerous community groups, social clubs, expatriate networks and special-interest organisations around, it is easy to get plugged into the daily lives of Singaporeans.
At the grassroots level, you can sign up for language and cooking courses as well as martial arts and dancing classes at your neighbourhood community centre. You can even join in the People’s Association activities or volunteer with them to help build the community. Fellow residents often meet and celebrate festivities through their Community Development Council and Town Council.
The spirit of volunteering is also alive and well, with many social movements and charity groups recruiting regularly to drive a cause or reach out to the needy. These groups include Association of Women for Action and Research, Singapore Environment Council, Community Chest, and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Foreign associations play a part in cultural assimilation for new visitors and migrants, such as the American Association of Singapore and the Kowloon Club.
Living in the most wired nation in the world (Infocomm Development Authority, February 2009), it’s no surprise that some of the younger Singaporeans have become adept at socialising electronically, and can be seen dexterously sending SMS texts, playing LAN games at Internet cafes, emailing at a coffee chain, or updating their blogs and making friends in chat rooms.
