Occasions like the WaterFest make waves with lovers of wakeboarding, dragon-boating and other popular water sports.
Xtreme Singapore attracts a huge following of young people who love to watch and perform gravity-defying stunts with skateboards, inline skates and BMX bikes. Adventure Singapore sets hearts racing with its annual adventure race and other action-packed sports such as Singapore's first dryland wakeboarding rail jam and disco-inspired skate jamming competition.
Held first in 2004, the AVIVA Open is now part of the International Badminton Federation's Super Series and is the first Olympic qualifying event.
The Lexus Cup golf tournament was launched for the first time in Asia in 2005 and has grown a strong base of support since. Other international events include the Barclays Singapore Open for golf and the Standard Chartered Marathon.
Among other high-profile events which made their debut here in 2007 were the Aviva Ironman 70.3 triathlon and a leg of the Fina Arena World Cup for swimming.
In 2008, Singapore hosted the first Formula 1 Grand Prix night race, kicking off an annual blast of speed and glamour.
Singapore also held the inaugural HSBC’s Women’s Champions tournament in 2008 at the Tanah Merah Golf Course.
Events lined up for 2009 are the Asian Youth Games and the Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup.
