APEC 2009 Singapore

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is the premier forum for facilitating growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region.

Founded in 1989, APEC is the only inter-governmental organisation in the world operating on the basis of non-binding commitments, open dialogue and equal respect for the views of all participants. APEC’s 21 members account for more than 40% of the world’s population, approximately 54.2% of the world’s Growth Domestic Product (GDP) and 43.7% of the world trade.

APEC Focus for Singapore 2009

Under the theme ‘Sustaining Growth, Connecting the Region’, APEC Singapore 2009 will build on APEC’s work to date in promoting economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment across the Asia-Pacific region.

In addition, given today’s challenging global economic environment, APEC 2009 is also focused on  overcoming the economic crisis and positioning member economies for a sustainable recovery in the post-crisis world.

Main areas for discussion during the year are:
• Positioning for Economic Recovery: exploring ways to foster growth that is both inclusive and sustainable in the post-crisis economic landscape
• Supporting Multilateral Trading Systems: upholding and strengthening the global multi-lateral trading system by resisting protectionism and supporting the successful conclusion of the Doha Round of trade talks
• Accelerating Regional Economic Integration: by facilitating trade, easing burdens on doing business within and between member economies and increasing the connectivity and efficiency of supply chains.

The APEC Logo

The APEC Singapore logo depicts the 21 APEC economies coming together to convene at a single point, working towards unity, cooperation and synergy among member economies to advance common interests.
