Energy Market Authority

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) seeks to forge a progressive energy landscape and to promote competition in the electricity and gas industries.

EMA organised the first-ever Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) in November 2008 to create a platform to engage key regional and international energy players, and to catalyse ideas on energy options for the future. The theme of the event was “Powering Cities of the Future”. More than 2,800 participants attended 38 events under the SIEW umbrella. EMA will collaborate with both existing and new partners to develop the SIEW into a premier event that adds value to the global discourse on energy issues. More information on the SIEW is available at http://singapore.iew.com.sg/

EMA has also stepped up efforts to spur the development of new energy technologies and position Singapore as a living laboratory for companies to develop, research and test their ideas. To facilitate this, EMA has set up an Energy Research Development Fund (ERDF). The ERDF will support the development of energy solutions that take into account the unique environment and conditions of Singapore’s energy landscape.

In November 2008, EMA also launched a pilot project aimed at transforming an offshore island, Pulau Ubin, into a “green” island powered by clean and renewable energy. This will provide a boost to Singapore’s ambition to become a global test-bedding site for new energy technologies.

With the liberalisation of the gas and electricity markets, EMA is looking to implement full contestability in the electricity retail market, which will allow domestic consumers to buy electricity from the retailer of their choice. To diversify the country’s sources of gas, Singapore will be building a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal.

The LNG terminal is a strategic infrastructure that reduces Singapore’s supply risks, by enabling the import of natural gas from different sources around the world. Work has started to develop and build the LNG terminal on the south-western part of Jurong Island. BG Asia Pacific Pte Limited (BG) has been appointed as the LNG Aggregator to import and sell LNG into Singapore for an initial gas demand of up to 3 million tonnes per annum.
