Singapore at a Glance

Accommodation

AccommodationDue to Singapore’s small size, land is a precious resource and property is constantly in demand.

While property prices have not hit the levels in Asian cities such as Tokyo and Hong Kong, they climb consistently and are competitive with most cosmopolitan cities worldwide.

A successful public housing programme implemented since the 1960s has allowed most Singaporean households to own or partially own their homes today, and live in clean and safe surroundings well-served by town councils, food centres and public transport. Over 80% of Singaporeans live in public housing built by the Housing and Development Board (HDB), while the rest live in landed property or private apartments.

Expatriates can find an array of accommodation types for rent, from colonial bungalows to seafront condominiums. Many have also made a home in HDB estates because of the lower rents.

Tourists have a choice of international hotels, budget hotels and serviced apartments, while many foreign students opt for hostels and homestays.
