Singapore Citizenship

Singapore encourages immigration for practical reasons.

Singapore CitizenshipSingapore’s falling birth rate means its population is unable to replace itself. In 2007, it fell to a record low of 1.29 children per woman of childbearing age, one of the lowest in the world and way below the population replacement rate of 2.1.

Efforts are also made to woo overseas Singaporeans to sink their roots back in Singapore again.

In recent years, immigration figures show that more foreigners are making Singapore their home. See Immigrations and Checkpoints Authority for more information on becoming a Singapore citizen or permanent resident.

Some benefits of citizenship include subsidised healthcare, education and housing, as well as family-friendly tax rebates and schemes. These are listed in the ICA’s Naturalisation Guide.
