Libraries
In spite of the conveniences that the Internet brings, libraries continue to be a relevant part of Singaporean life, thanks to the National Library Board (NLB).
NLB’s mission is to provide a trusted, accessible and globally-connected library and information service through the National Library, the comprehensive network of Public Libraries, the Regional Libraries and the Community Children's Libraries.
NLB’s innovative use of technology and strategic collaborations with partners ensure that library users have convenient access to a rich array of relevant information services and resources. For example, book returning can be done electronically at any branch island-wide, 24 hours a day.
In addition, you can access NLB’s eResources to browse over 800,000 eBooks and 600 eMagazines for free. With these free electronic resources, you can check out company profiles and get your hands on the latest articles of popular journals and magazines. Also, you can feast your eyes on full-edition and coloured digital global newspapers, fashion, entertainment and sports magazines, and more!
In 2005, the National Library underwent a major revamp and was relocated from Stamford Road to 100 Victoria Street. The library now includes a generous collection of 650,000 items, as well as cosy surroundings that draw many Singaporeans for a leisurely read, research, or to attend talks and seminars.
Reference Library
The Reference Library, which is situated in the National Library, offers a collection of 530,000 print and non-print materials on subjects such as Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Business and more. The Reference Library strives to be the premier resource of works about Singapore and the region, serving both local and overseas researchers and academics.
Public Libraries
The Public Libraries cater to the information needs of communities across Singapore, and deliver a balance of fictional and non-fictional materials in print and non-print format.
For more specialised information, users will find either one of the three Regional Libraries helpful; Jurong, Tampines and Woodlands libraries have an extensive collection of reference materials (both print and non-print).
There are even libraries for children, with fun multimedia programmes, situated at the void decks of public housing estates. These Community Children’s Libraries cater to children aged 10 and below. The books are available in English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil.
